I am delighted to debut the Little Skein community yarn support program.
This is a voluntary donation program where, if you are able, you can donate anywhere from $1 to $120, and I will use those funds to match a low-income knitter with his or her Little Skein product of choice funded by you.
Here's how it works:
If you need making supplies, apply here. On the honor system, knitters with low incomes share with me via a confidential Google form which Little Skein products they would love to have and use.
If you have extra financial resources, donate: Knitters who have more ample resources can contribute whatever dollar amount of support they would like to provide by "purchasing" this listing. (For flexible dollar donations, just purchase multiples of the pooled support option.)
Let me do the matching: I'll send the right skein of yarn or the desired kit to the limited income maker who wants it. I will further cover the cost of all shipping. (For the time being, this program is open to US knitters only.)
Let's celebrate the results together: I'll send out monthly updates to everyone who has donated to let you know how much was donated and what was sent. (In order to protect the privacy of our fellow low income knitters and to ensure there is no stigma around the program, I won't share names or locations, just numbers.)
What I like best about this idea is that it matches up donors and recipients in the generous Little Skein community while also ensuring that the artists I work with (and I) are paid for our work to create beautiful knitting supplies.
Please note: this donation is not tax deductible. It is a direct payment to me (and on which I pay income tax) and which you trust me to use to purchase shop inventory and send it to a low income maker (who self identifies on the honor system).
Thank you for supporting this pilot program if you can and for helping to make our community more connected and inclusive.
