The perfect yarn for shawls and accessories: ultra-soft and a luxury with which to work.
House Blend no. 1 is my perfect fiber blend for shawls and accessories. It's an ultra-soft combination of merino, cashmere and nylon, with a gentle twist that's neither too tight nor too loose. It's soft, drapey, beautiful to work with, and takes on lovely tonal colors.
Little Skein's House Blend no. 1
Colorway: Coit Tower
Inspiration: San Francisco
80% superwash merino wool, 10% cashmere, 10% nylon
415 yards | 100 grams
Color notes: Coit Tower is inspired by the view of San Francisco from across the bay, as a shining white city, with the cool blue, grey, and breaking pink light of dawn.
House Blend no. 1 is a soft and drapey yarn. It's best used for next-to-skin accessories such as shawls, hats, mitts, and cowls. It's not ideal for socks because the cashmere content makes the finished sock a bit too delicate and prone to pilling. For socks, I recommend our bouncy House Sock yarn.
When knitting an accessory with House Blend no. 1, aim for a gauge of 22 to 24 stitches per 4 inches, which is usually achieved with a needle size of US 4 to 6 (3.5 to 4 mm).
I create the colors for our house yarns here in my San Francisco studio and find my inspiration in the colors of my beloved city, in literature and in my well-worn Pantone color book. Colors are then brought to life in small batches of just 4 or 5 skeins at a time.
When color is applied by hand like this, it adds a vibrance and vitality to the yarn that cannot be duplicated by commercial means. My dye partner and I treat each skein as a canvas and our colors as artist's brushes, preparing each skein as a luxury and delight for the knitter who will create with it.
Care of your finished knitting: I recommend you hand wash your finished knitted item in cold or lukewarm water and lay it flat to dry. While superwash yarns are treated so they can be machine washed, taking care to wash by hand and air dry will greatly prolong the life and beauty of your handknitted item.
