Little Skein in the Big Wool is an online-only shop, created and run from my home studio in San Francisco.
I first had the idea for Little Skein in the summer of 2012, amidst vacation-powered sunshine, very good coffee and intriguing knitting. The idea that I just couldn't shake was to make themed knitting accessories that would bring to life the stories and books that inspire me — using hard-to-find, uncommon and utterly beautiful materials and fabrics. I opened the shop on a part-time basis a few months later, and Little Skein became a full-time venture for me in fall 2013.
Little Skein is now a thriving online shop with a wonderful team of three. I still do all of the design work, from creating new kits to new products, as well as hand-pack each order. I have a professional sewist who helps me with production sewing (and whose technical talent is oh so superior!) and another wonderful colleague and expert knitter who works alongside me to ensure that your order is inspiring, perfect, and utterly delights you.
I started the Little Skein shop on Etsy, and in the fall of 2015 moved to our permanent home on the web here at www.littleskein.com. During our time on Etsy, I was honored to introduce my shop to thousands of knitters and sent over 9,000 handmade items to new homes. Since then, the shop's following has continued to grow and I've found my own creativity, likewise, bursting at the seams.
At home, I've always been a passionate knitter, sewist, home cook and all around fiber enthusiast. Before starting Little Skein, I spent a decade as a foundation program officer, working as a strategist and program designer with a host of charitable and philanthropic organizations. I've realized that the same thread runs through all parts of my life -- I am a maker. I love start-up organizations and businesses, new programs and new fabrics, a well-curated stash, and the beauty of always learning and adapting.
As @littleskeinanne, you'll find me on a host of social media sites, where I share behind the scenes news and pictures. Please friend/follow me -- I'd love to share what I'm working on and learn more about what you're doing.
Please have a look around the shop's shelves, and I hope you find something to inspire your knitting!
